About

My Conservation Expertise

Holder of the renowned West Dean Diploma in Clock Conservation (2015), alongside a lifelong passion for horology, extensive research, and additional training through the British Horological Institute and other providers, this practioner brings both a deep knowledge and hands-on expertise to every project. Experience includes advising national institutions (at both local and national level) on the care of ancient turret clocks and sundials.

At Consistency Clock Conservation, all work is governed by conservation tenets and established best-practice - with an emphasis on accountability, cultural heritage and understanding the object in context.  As a sole conservator, only a limited number of projects are undertaken - ensuring each piece receives the time and attention it requires. The approach is based on traditional methods and techniques, augmented by current technologies, bound by professional standards and practice.

Services

I work on historic mechanical clocks and timepieces, spring and weight-driven, manufactured prior to 1930. Each object is approached individually, restoring it to safe and reliable working condition. Exceptionally - significant or ancient objects are best served by static conservation - to ensure their long-term survival.

All work is performed in my own fully equipped workshop. Where appropriate, wheels and pinions are cut on-site and balance staffs turned in-house: I have a no sub-contracting policy (any necessary exceptions are agreed, in advance, with the customer).

Objects collected-from and delivered-to site by the conservator. Warranties provided.

Conservation Assessments and Reporting

Detailed examination of the object’s condition, with written assessments to support decision-making, funding applications, or collection management.

Restoration to Safe and Reliable Working Condition

All parts of the mechanism inspected, repaired, cleaned, lubricated, tested as necessary. No "quick fixes". Reliability is the goal.

Object Interpretation and Advice

Historical and mechanical context provided to support curators, collectors, and custodians in understanding their objects.

Specialist Collection and Transportation

Handled personally, using appropriate packing and care; included within the quoted project fee.

Preventative Conservation Planning

Guidance on environmental conditions, handling, and display to prevent future deterioration and extend the object's life.

On-site Call-outs for Initial Assessment

Includes inspection, photography, and recommendations. Charged hourly with travel time included (free - where follow-on work results).

What I Don’t Offer

  • Working directly on pocket or wrist watches - though I do visit a team of watchmakers in West Sussex, quarterly, who are experts in what they do. The customer pays them directly. Minimum charge £500.

  • Work on Barometers, Chronometers or Atmos Clocks.

  • “Quick fixes”, "Just get it going" or any other superficial intervention.

  • Work on "cheap"clocks - made with insubstantial materials and which (consequently) have an in-built obsolescence.  Reliability is not achievable ("Your clock is made of cheese, Sir!"). Most "Cuckoo" clocks fall into this category.

  • Work for "the trade".
